1949 Frazer Manhattan F-47C5 – The Super Sonic

In the world of vintage cars, there are vehicles that represent status, and then there are those that represent a “new era” of design. The 1949 Frazer Manhattan F-47C5, currently housed at the Payana Car Museum in Mysuru, is a perfect example of post-war American innovation that found a prestigious home here in Karnataka.

Before we dive into the mechanics, the provenance of this car is truly special. This F-47C5 was graciously presented to the collection by Shri H.H. Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji of Shravanabelagola. Seeing a car of this international stature linked to such a prominent spiritual seat adds a unique dimension to its history in India.

The “Super Sonic” Heart

Don’t let the elegant, sweeping lines fool you—under the hood of this Frazer lies a “Super Sonic” heart. It is powered by the Frazer Continental Red Seal engine, a 3707 cc, 6-cylinder powerhouse designed for smooth, effortless cruising.

In 1949, while many manufacturers were still using pre-war technology, the Frazer Manhattan F-47C5 was pushing for a more refined driving experience. With 100 hp and a top speed of 133 kph, it was a formidable presence on the highways of its time.

Ahead of Its Time: The Push-Button Doors

A notable feature of the Frazer—shared at the time only by luxury giants like Lincoln—was that its four doors had push-button openers.

In an era when almost every car used traditional pull or twist handles, the Frazer featured these sleek, integrated mechanisms. While I didn’t get a macro shot of the button itself, you can see in my photos how this feature allowed for a incredibly clean, “handle-free” side profile that was decades ahead of its time.

Why it’s a Must-See

The Frazer Manhattan was the flagship of the Kaiser-Frazer Corporation, a company that dared to challenge the “Big Three” in Detroit after WWII.

Walking around it at Payana, you can see why it was considered a “boutique” luxury car. It wasn’t mass-produced in the millions; it was built for those who wanted something different, modern, and exclusive. Thanks to the generosity of the Swamiji of Shravanabelagola, we can still admire this “Super Sonic” pioneer today in Mysuru.
